Thrifty Fun!

December 27, 2008

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! I have spent a quiet couple of days at home with hubby watching movies and being crafty. It has been so nice to step away from the hustle and bustle of the world and just enjoy being together.

Last weekend we had opportunity to visit a couple of local flea markets and came away with a treasure or two. First, we visited a new flea market in downtown Texarkana. I believe we had visited once sometime ago, and because it is not in a part of town we don’t regularly visit, it slipped our minds. I saw an ad in the American Classifieds and knew we had to visit again. This little shop will definitely be a regular stop. I found a wonderful selection of vintage spools. They will be perfect for a project I have in mind.

I also found this glass jar. I am collecting them to store odds and ends in my new crafty corner. Once I get everything in order, I’ll be sure to share pictures of the new space. Oh, and the buttons didn’t come with the jar. They were already here.

Isn’t this handkerchief pretty! I just loved the colors! Someday, I want to paint our living room pale blue and put up some curtains with pink/red color. That bright spot of color would just be so pretty!

We also a visited an outdoor flea market on HWY 67! It was cold and windy, but worth the stop. I found more vintage jars and a beautiful glass bowl. My husband also lucked out with a double-edge safety razor and Old Spice Shaving Mug for only $1.50.

The larger of these two jars was found right here at home while doing some “Spring Cleaning.” I guess it’s always a good idea to check our cupboards from time to time.

Another place I love to visit is Mozelle’s located in downtown, Atlanta, Texas. One never knows what treasure may found in this lovely little shop. It is a little like a yard sale held indoors. Here, I found these beautiful salt and pepper shakers. I just love the strawberries and they look great in my kitchen!

These vintage Santa mugs were just too cute to pass up. They still have a sticker on the bottom that says TG&Y stores, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They are a perfect addition to our Christmas decor.

Before I could find the time to clean and photograph all the above goodies, Tuesday rolled around and we were off to Jefferson, Texas with some friends. My husband and two of his friends and been planning this trip for a couple of weeks. They are all shaving enthusiasts and wanted to hang out and look for vintage/antique razors and shaving mugs. They were kind enough to let me tag along and shop for my little treasures. Thanks guys! Jefferson, Texas has a lovely downtown area full of shops. Most of them are antique and flea market affairs. There were so many lovely things to see and I am still mooning over a 1928 set of “Little Women” and “Little Men” by Lousia May Alcott. If only I had the funds for such a wonderful treasure. I did find a lovely lady figurine, a tin box made in England, a Doris Day record, and a head. The head is similar to one I played with as a child. My aunt owned a beauty shop and still had a head she practiced on while in beauty school. It was a wonderful toy!

This head, as you can see, was purchased as a home for my hat. I had more fun washing the hair and making the choker. It reminded me of playing with Barbies as a child. I did indeed get my money’s worth out of this head. If any of you ladies need to feel a little like a child or just looking for some fun, I highly recommend purchasing one of these for yourself.

Before continuing, I must share with you a little something my nephew said/did. He is two years old(almost three) and Monday evening he did not want me to leave. I told him that I had to go home and get plenty of sleep before tomorrow because I was going treasure hunting. Before I could explain further he became very excited. His eyes were suddenly as big around as saucers as he exclaimed, “You’re going to a pirate, arrrrrr!!!!!!” It was so funny and I got so tickled. All I could do was laugh. Now somehow flea markets will always be associated with pirates and my nephew’s big smile.

Finally, earlier today we drove into town and visited our favorite flea market, The Attic. As I usually do in this wonderland of vintage goodies, I found a few treasures. I couldn’t resist a 1955 copy of “The Story of Lousia May Alcott.” These milk glass mugs simply begged to be brought home and finally, I found a candy dish!

Well, there it folks. Our thrifty fun in words and pictures. I hope you enjoyed the tour and if anyone knows anything about the pieces purchased please leave a comment. Finding information on flea market treasures isn’t always easy. I do appreciate any help received.

Have a Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Christmas Tree Anew

December 16, 2008

I had wanted some pinecone ornaments to hang in our little tree, but had been unsuccessful in finding ones that were small and not covered in glitter. I wanted a traditional, natural look. Saturday we had supper with my sister and her husband at Cracker Barrel. After eating, we wandered around the shop and suddenly it appeared. Beautiful, wonderful, perfect pine cone garland on the 60% sale table. I just had to make the purchase. I couldn’t wait to get home and put it on the tree!

Later while perusing the world wide web, I came across a vintage inspired candy cane ornament tutorial involving tea stained pipe cleaners and glitter. It looked so easy and pretty. I just had to give it a try. Although, I chose not to add glitter, I was pleased with the outcome.

Once these two elements were added it became clear that the bows on the tree just didn’t work. Red plaid bows were needed. Fortunately, I just happened to have some from a couple of Christmases ago.

Our tree as of 12/16/2008. I have no plans for further changes, but who knows.

A Gift for a Book Lover

December 16, 2008

I love to read and my Dad obviously knows this. This was one of the gifts I received from him and my stepmom this year. What could be more perfect than a monogramed bag and a selection of books?! The only thing missing is a bookmark or two or three. Nikki at Whimsy Girl has this wonderful bookmark tutorial. Problem solved!

Thanks for the Furniture!

December 16, 2008

It all started with a phone call from my Dad. It seems he and my stepmom are doing a little redecorating. They are bringing in some new pieces of furniture and needed to find a new home for some of the pieces already owned. “Would you be interested,” Dad asked? I hesitated until the word antique found its way into the conversation. How does one turn down anything antique? Of course, the only way to make room for new furniture was to find a home for a couple of old pieces. Somehow this led to cleaning out and reorganizing some space. My husband found a newlywed couple in need of some furniture. They came and picked up an item or two. We took a donation to Goodwill and my Dad showed up a day early with the new stuff. Needless to say it has been exciting, hectic, and little crazy around my house. We are now the proud owners of a corner curio cabinet that once belonged to my Grandmother, an antique curio purchased by my Dad, and a beautiful new dining table set. The true excitement, for me at least, has been two part. First, I divided my Kewpie collection and a few antique knickknacks between the curios. This freed up some much needed shelf space for books. I no longer have books piled here and there throughtout the house. They have a home! Secondly, we were able to reallocate some space and I now have a crafty space! My beading and other crafty supplies have a home and I have a place to work. I also moved a chair and lamp into my space for reading. I am still getting some things in order, though. For instance, our record player is currently in my new crafty corner. We want to put it on the record stand in the living room, but our little 4ft. tree is already in residence there. We will take care of that after the holidays. Still I am quite happy and excited. I’ll try to take a few pics later today or tomorrow and get them posted. Thanks Dad and Paula for the new furniture and the extra space!

How do you do your holidays?

December 10, 2008

I just came from Vintage Indie where I found this cute survey. Please feel free to play along.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I use both. I always to try to find paper or bags that suit the person receiving the gift.

2. Real tree or Artificial? A real tree. I love the idea of a real tree, but allergies have tended to get in the way.

3. When do you put up your tree? First weekend in December.

4. When do you take the tree down? Usually on New Year’s Day after watching the Rose Bowl Parade!

5. Do you like eggnog? No, I’ve never cared for eggnog.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I don’t really remember a favorite. I always just looked forward to dinner and opening presents! I guess it was more about the activitiy than the gift.

7. Hardest person to buy for? My husband’s grandmother and aunt. His grandmother has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t really know what is going on and his aunt is mentally disabled and has pretty everything she wants or needs.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My husband. I know him best and have no trouble knowing what he wants or likes or needs.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, it took a good deal of searching, but hubby and I finally found one we both liked.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? I mail Christmas cards every year.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I love my grandma. I truly do, but she never was any good at picking out clothes. One year we received some truly ugly sweaters.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? White Christmas

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? We try to collect things throughout the year, especially for the kids.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I can’t remember, but it is possible.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?Grandma’s fudge cake and Mom’s chocolate chip pie. Can’t possibly pick a favorite.

16. Lights on the tree? Yes. I enjoy both white and colored lights.

17. Favorite Christmas song? I don’t think I have a favorite song. I love Jazzy Christmas music. Right now I have Diana Krall’s Christmas CD on my Zune. I also enjoy the Crooners and Swing style Christmas music.

18.Travel at Christmas or stay home? We live in the same town as my Husband’s brothers. My family lives about two hours away. So each year we rotate. For instance, this year we traveled at Thanksgiving to see my family and we will stay home for Christmas. Next year we will spend Thanksgiving at home, and travel to see my family at Christmas. This way we get to watch all the nieces and nephews open presents and create holiday memories with everyone.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Uh, no. I tried and failed.

20. Angel on the treetop or a star? We use an aluminum foil star we made our first Christmas as a married couple.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? In my family we always opened presents on Christmas Eve and then had Santa gifts and stockings on Christmas Day.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? well, the disturbing stories of smashed persons at Wal-Marts bother me. I had to leave Starr’s answer up here, yes those are just wrong, wrong, wrong people. I have to agree with the above. I fail to see how any sale or gift is worth more than a person’s life and/or well-being.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I love the tradional red, green, and gold. For a couple of years we put a white tree covered in blue ornaments which I also loved.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? I couldn’t tell you a single thing we eat at Christmas. My favorite part of the feast is looking around the table and seeing my family.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year? I want to spend the day with family and maybe a good book or two as well.
