Vintage Paper Dolls

October 12, 2009

It has occurred to me that it’s been awhile since I’ve shared a thrifted goodie. I do have a lovely treasure well worth sharing. A few weeks ago, we visited our usual flea markets and I stumbled upon this little fun find in a basket sitting on the floor.

I just love these Vintage Bride and Groom paper dolls. I was so excited to find this treasure! I haven’t decided just what I am going to do with them, but I can envision so many possibilities.

September 13, 2009

Here are just a few pirate themed goodies I found around the world wide web. I hope you enjoy! First up we have a replica of a 1930’s pirate costume pattern from WearingHistory. Next we have the cutest cupcake toppers from ScrapYourStory. I just adore this clutch from LittleBlackRabbit and this tie from ToyBreaker is absolutely beautiful. These Lego cufflinks from PinkTopHat are fun and quirky. Wall decals seem to be quite the thing right now and these ships from Christianitees12 are perfect for the pirate lover. Lost Mountain Clayworks makes beautiful pirate-worthy wares. What could be more fun than this vintage-inspired pirate dress from VivienofHolloway? With Talk like a Pirate Day looming, I thought this dictionary from Amazon might come in handy. This doll from TheTinderBox reminds me of a doll my grandma made for me once. Isn’t she cute? Everyone knows that a pirate’s makeup is of utmost importance. No pirate lass would dare be caught without her DragonScales eyedust from ModCloth. A Peter the Pirate Jack-in-the-box is a necessity for any pirate-loving kid. This one can be found at Amazon. I’m becoming quite a fan of Hello Kitty and just couldn’t resist this pirate plushie from Sanrio. Isn’t she just the cutest? I couldn’t leave out my fellow readers and booklovers. I have something just for you, bookplates from ModernClassicsKids. I love old school desks. They are the perfect places for little ones to draw, color, and write. This one from Omgurl is full of pirate fun! I have a little something for all of you music lovers.  I found this 2 cd set of sea songs and pirate ballads on Amazon. It’s also available in an MP3 format. Looking for a way to make breakfast fun? May I recommend a pirate toast stamper. These can be found in a variety of places online. I found this one on PerpetualKid. I simply couldn’t consider my little gallery of pirate fun complete without a sockmonkey. I found Bad Billy Blart at YackyJan. She has lots of delightful monkeys looking for a good home. Lastly, a little something for the movie lovers among us. I have never seen The Pirate, but with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland its bound to be lots of fun with singing and dancing. A copy is waiting for you at Amazon. I hope you arrrr having as much fun in my little pirate gallery as I had in putting it together. Come back tomrrow and check out all the piratey goodness to be found in jewelry. There are some really pretty pirate-inspired pieces out there. I can’t wait to share them with you.

Fashion Advice Finally Worked!

September 6, 2009

Have you ever been flipping through a fashion magazine and read the advice about mixing and matching pieces from your wardrobe to create new, fun outfits? They will suggest things like pairing that ruffled shirt from two seasons ago with a boyfriend blazer and skinny jeans. It sounds so good and easy. The picture they show is so cute. Then you remember you never bought a ruffle shirt two seasons ago. And skinny jeans are just not your style. I can’t help thinking sometimes that these people would go into shock if they had to shop in my neck of the woods instead New York City. Well, lastnight I was perusing my favorite mags in search of the height of this year’s fall fashion. I noticed the scarves and an idea began to form in the back of my mind. I soon found myself in the bedroom with my favorite khaki skirt, two v-neck t-shirts (one black and one navy blue), a v-neck navy blue ribbed short-sleeved sweater, and a number of scarves I already owned. I’m standing next to the bed looking at this assortment and suddenly a number of different, cute and trendy outfits appeared before my very eyes. One of these was carefully chosen to wear to church service this morning.

Isn’t it cute? I was just giddy with excitement! I even thought that one could exchange the skirt for jeans or trousers. Even more fun outfits! I believe I may have made a fashion breakthrough! I know its completely frivolous, but fashion can sometimes be quite fun!

Random Tidbits of Life

January 25, 2009

Friday was a good mail day! I had signed up for a free trial issue of Lucky Magazine sometime ago. I received a bill for further issues, but no magazine and then on Friday they arrived. I now have my trial issue and the first of issue of my subscription. It’s always fun to get a magazine in the mail, but getting two is just awesome!

Following the arrival of the mail was a trip into town for a little shopping. If you have a Big Lots in your area and enjoy paper crafting of any kind, then you might want to run into town yourself. I happened upon this totally cool grab bag of paper goodies. I know they’ll bring hours of enjoyment!

We couldn’t resist one last visit to Waldenbooks while we were in town. I added three more treats to my TBR pile! I just wish I knew which one to read first!

A visit to my two favorite flea markets on Saturday revealed a perfect Valentine’s Day Gift for my sharing sister at church and some wonderful little victorian figurines for my ever progressing new work/craft space.

And there you have it folks, our exciting, fun-filled weekend!

January 12, 2009

Simply had to share these beautiful necklaces made by my cousin, Lindy. She is so talented!

The first two necklaces are mine. One is a gift from Lindy’s mom, my Aunt Vickie, and the other is a gift from my mom. The last one belongs to my sister. I think all of them are just so pretty. Keep up the good Lindy! I can’t wait to see what else you create!

Thrifty Fun!

December 27, 2008

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! I have spent a quiet couple of days at home with hubby watching movies and being crafty. It has been so nice to step away from the hustle and bustle of the world and just enjoy being together.

Last weekend we had opportunity to visit a couple of local flea markets and came away with a treasure or two. First, we visited a new flea market in downtown Texarkana. I believe we had visited once sometime ago, and because it is not in a part of town we don’t regularly visit, it slipped our minds. I saw an ad in the American Classifieds and knew we had to visit again. This little shop will definitely be a regular stop. I found a wonderful selection of vintage spools. They will be perfect for a project I have in mind.

I also found this glass jar. I am collecting them to store odds and ends in my new crafty corner. Once I get everything in order, I’ll be sure to share pictures of the new space. Oh, and the buttons didn’t come with the jar. They were already here.

Isn’t this handkerchief pretty! I just loved the colors! Someday, I want to paint our living room pale blue and put up some curtains with pink/red color. That bright spot of color would just be so pretty!

We also a visited an outdoor flea market on HWY 67! It was cold and windy, but worth the stop. I found more vintage jars and a beautiful glass bowl. My husband also lucked out with a double-edge safety razor and Old Spice Shaving Mug for only $1.50.

The larger of these two jars was found right here at home while doing some “Spring Cleaning.” I guess it’s always a good idea to check our cupboards from time to time.

Another place I love to visit is Mozelle’s located in downtown, Atlanta, Texas. One never knows what treasure may found in this lovely little shop. It is a little like a yard sale held indoors. Here, I found these beautiful salt and pepper shakers. I just love the strawberries and they look great in my kitchen!

These vintage Santa mugs were just too cute to pass up. They still have a sticker on the bottom that says TG&Y stores, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They are a perfect addition to our Christmas decor.

Before I could find the time to clean and photograph all the above goodies, Tuesday rolled around and we were off to Jefferson, Texas with some friends. My husband and two of his friends and been planning this trip for a couple of weeks. They are all shaving enthusiasts and wanted to hang out and look for vintage/antique razors and shaving mugs. They were kind enough to let me tag along and shop for my little treasures. Thanks guys! Jefferson, Texas has a lovely downtown area full of shops. Most of them are antique and flea market affairs. There were so many lovely things to see and I am still mooning over a 1928 set of “Little Women” and “Little Men” by Lousia May Alcott. If only I had the funds for such a wonderful treasure. I did find a lovely lady figurine, a tin box made in England, a Doris Day record, and a head. The head is similar to one I played with as a child. My aunt owned a beauty shop and still had a head she practiced on while in beauty school. It was a wonderful toy!

This head, as you can see, was purchased as a home for my hat. I had more fun washing the hair and making the choker. It reminded me of playing with Barbies as a child. I did indeed get my money’s worth out of this head. If any of you ladies need to feel a little like a child or just looking for some fun, I highly recommend purchasing one of these for yourself.

Before continuing, I must share with you a little something my nephew said/did. He is two years old(almost three) and Monday evening he did not want me to leave. I told him that I had to go home and get plenty of sleep before tomorrow because I was going treasure hunting. Before I could explain further he became very excited. His eyes were suddenly as big around as saucers as he exclaimed, “You’re going to a pirate, arrrrrr!!!!!!” It was so funny and I got so tickled. All I could do was laugh. Now somehow flea markets will always be associated with pirates and my nephew’s big smile.

Finally, earlier today we drove into town and visited our favorite flea market, The Attic. As I usually do in this wonderland of vintage goodies, I found a few treasures. I couldn’t resist a 1955 copy of “The Story of Lousia May Alcott.” These milk glass mugs simply begged to be brought home and finally, I found a candy dish!

Well, there it folks. Our thrifty fun in words and pictures. I hope you enjoyed the tour and if anyone knows anything about the pieces purchased please leave a comment. Finding information on flea market treasures isn’t always easy. I do appreciate any help received.

Have a Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
