Everything Austen Challenge!

Recently, while on Goodreads, I discovered that Stephanie of Stephanie’s Written Word had issued an Everything Austen Challenge. The idea is to watch and/or read everything Austen between now and January 1, 2010. She asked that participants choose 6 items to watch/read. I want to take a moment to say a BIG THANK YOU to Stephanie for setting up this challenge and mostly for allowing me to enter. I was a bit late discovering this awesome challenge! I have decided to watch three movies and read three books. Here is my list:

Food for Thought

I received this in an email from my cousin. It was so good it simply demanded to be shared!

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree..
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck..
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12 It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

Joy! Create It! Seize It! Share It!

Earlier in the year I spoke of intention words. I chose Joy as my word for the year. The idea being to create joy around me, to look for joy and seize it whenever I could, and to share joy with those around me. Well, over the weekend I literally seized the joy with the purchase of this splendid stamp. I even got a good deal in the bargain, having caught a half price sale at Hobby Lobby. As for the joy in my life, I have seen it increase in the last few months and have begun to see a pattern. As I do things that are true to my faith, beliefs, and myself I find more and more joy all around me. This should, I suppose, be perfectly obvious. Somehow, I think, most of us don’t realize just how true this is. I have started to focus more on the things I feel the most passionate about such as bible class and World Bible School. This has meant not participating in some church activities so more time and attention can be spent with these two projects. Another change I’ve made is to read more. Those of you who know me might be a bit surprised by this statement. In truth, however, I had fallen out of the habit of reading as much as I used to do. School had a part in this. Between papers and tests and such there just seemed to be little time for reading. I am making the time once again and keeping the TV turned off more and more. I’ve also found exercise and begun including it in my life as a priority. With this new routine I’ve learned how much better I feel when I exercise. I feel more youthful, slimmer, and more energetic. It’s beginning to be more about the exercise than simply about losing weight. These are the biggest changes I’ve made and they have led to more joy in my life. I encourage all of you to find the things you are passionate about and jump in with both feet. This doesn’t mean being selfish. Remember we must love ourselves before we can “love thy neighbor as thyself.” How can we possibly love ourselves if we don’t know who we are? So, find the things that bring you joy and share that joy with others!

Joy — Create It, Sieze It, Share It!

While scanning the forums on Goodreads, I came across a thread about intention words. The idea, as I understand it, is to pick a word or words as your intention for the new year. Your word is something you wish to strive for in the coming months. Most of the words chosen have been attitude words such as empowered and others have been things like patience or passion. Once a word is chosen you must keep it in your conscienciousness. This can be done in many ways, such as writing it on the dry erase board on the refrigerator and adding it to your desktop wallpaper. I have chosen the word joy. I want to create joy for myself and others, seize joy in the moments and people around me, and share joy. I think that it is also important to hold on to joyous memories even in sad or scary times. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I wish everyone a new year full of joy and I invite all of you to pick your own intention word(s) and make this new year one of growth and hope and love.

Born to Shop!

Serve Him.  ”Serve only the Lord your God and fear Him alone.  Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.”  Deuteronomy 13:4  Serve God by serving others.

Honor Him.  ”All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is by his boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again.  Now we live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus Christ rose again from the dead.”  1 Peter 1:3  Honor God for who He is and for He allowed you to be through Christ.

Inspire Me Thursday

As I read this week’s theme I immediately thought of my 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. My hubby and I teach their bible class at church. The kids love making things and I try to use art to teach whenever possible. This morning I provided each child with a bag of beads. They were instructed to trade with each other for different beads and construct a bracelet. I wanted them to see and learn the importance of fellowship in the church. Their bracelets were made more lovely by sharing and trading. In the same way our lives can so blessed by sharing and caring for each other. I didn’t have a camera this morning in class, but I thought I would share a photo of the beads used.

InspireMeThursday

This week’s InspireMeThursday theme is crayon art. My submission was actually a fun project my husband and I did together. It is quite simple to do. One should choose a crayon color or colors and melt the them individually. While the crayon(s) are melting fill a jar or two with cold water. Lastly pour the melted crayon in the jar and create wonderful crayon sculptures. Here is what I created using my favorite color, blue.
