The Scarlet Pimpernel
by Baroness Emmuska Orczy
This was a very enjoyable read. The Scarlet Pimpernel is an Englishman of nobility who has taken it upon himself to rescue the French aristocracy from Madam Guillotine. He is the leader of a league of men who have joined him on this quest. He is also married to a beautiful, young French girl. Pride has reared its ugly head in their marriage and created a distance between them. The villain is a Frenchman who is using Marguerite and her love for her brother to try and track down the Scarlet Pimpernel. When Marguerite realizes the danger that her actions, foolish pride, and the Frenchman have put her husband in, she rushes to his aide and rescue. This is a fun read and worth picking up.
“We seek him here, we seek him there,
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he is heaven?—Is he in hell?
That demmed elusive Pimpernel?”
